San Francisco: San Francisco Weekend Preview: Indie-Rock-o-Rama Edition

Event Details: San Francisco Weekend Preview: Indie-Rock-o-Rama Edition - :

This weekend, you won’t be able to throw a 7″ single without hitting a hipster square between the eyes as indie rock descends upon the peninsula with a vengeance. A scourge of punk and indie rock bands invades San Francisco from outdoor festivals to smoke-filled music clubs. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to show up at the ones that have the most underground cred. Chances are you already have your tickets, American Apparel deep v-neck and Urban Outfitters plimsoll sneakers laid out on your dresser. Onward…

Friday

  • Nomeansno, Triclops! @ The Uptown. I would feel a little johnny-come-lately walking into a Nomeansno show in 2009, but the truth is Nomeansno’s Wrong has been a classic in my mind since I got my hands on it in high school back in the 90s. Hard to believe that almost 2 decades later these songs still resonate in a world where shit pseudo-punk bands like Paramore have invaded the pop music space. Word has it on their blog that Nomeansno are going to re-record Wrong. Worth the drive to Oaktown if you’re into it. I saw Triclops about a year ago during the Polk Street Fair. They’re okay, I guess. Should be good for a few laughs just to see the mosh pit they’ll incite. Disasteroid rounds out the triple bill. Details: Doors open at 9 PM, $13 cover, at The Uptown at 1928 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.
  • The Melvins, Psychic Ills, Butthole Surfers @ Regency Ballroom. And if Nomeansno isn’t enough, seeing The Melvins and Butthole Surfers should be enough to relive your punk rock halcyon days. If I have to tell you about these bands, then fuggeddaboudit. Go buy the Paramore album instead. Details: Doors open at 9 PM at the Regency Ballroom at 1290 Sutter Street and Van Ness.

trisSaturday thru Sunday

  • Treasure Island Music Festival on Treasure Island. Mega-indie festival, the Treasure Island Music Festival, kicks off on Saturday. The 2-day gala is well worth the (high) ticket prices to see some behemoths of the indie rock scene. If you have to pick between the two days of music, my money is on Sunday. This day is jam-packed with The Flaming Lips, Grizzly Bear, Beirut, The Decemberists, Yo La Tengo, and Pavement ex-patriate, Spiral Stairs. Details: Check out the Treasure Island Music Festival website for complete information including tickets and show times.

Also on Saturday…

  • Mount Eerie @ Great American Music Hall. Should you choose to skip Treasure Island, Mount Eerie takes that stage at the Great American Music Hall. Pitchfork snobs everywhere can argue that their latest album, Wind’s Poem, will deserve a place on year-end top 10 lists. Should be interesting to see how this album translates live given the relative inaccessibility of the recorded tracks. This is where you’ll likely find me on Saturday night. Shares a quadruple bill with Why?, Au, and Serengetti & Polyphonic. Details: Doors open at 8 PM, $16 cover, at Great American Music Hall at 859 O’Farrell Street.
  • Monsters of Folk @ Fox Theater. Across the bridge in Oaktown, the East Bay challenges Treasure Island by bringing forth self-proclaimed Monsters of Folk, Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward, and Mike Mogis. Details: Doors open at 8 PM, and tickets start at $45.50 (hell no!). At the Fox Theater on 1807 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.
  • Jesus Lizard @ Fillmore. And finally on Saturday, Jesus Lizard completes the tour down punk memory lane when they stare down the stage at the Fillmore. Details: Doors open at 9 PM at the Fillmore on 1805 Geary Boulevard and Fillmore.

Lastly, I’m usually too busy, too tired or too hung over on Sundays to post Monday events on time, so consider this a super-sized weekend preview. Check out these bands on Monday, October 19:  Since Jay Reatard canceled, you are now clear to check out Beach House when they take the stage at Bottom of the Hill provided you can score some tickets to the sold-out show. There’s usually someone scalping tickets outside the door. But take comfort– if you can’t sneak past the bouncers, you can just read Zack’s interview with review of the band on The New Gay. Details: Doors open at 8:30 PM, (sold-out) tickets are $14 at Bottom of the Hill on 1233 17th Street.

The bentzen ball is cancelled. Notaro has to be in court to face her criminally insane stalker- who is on the loose as we speak. Peace.
