Ask A Straight Guy: HEALTH’s John Famiglietti
LA noise-rock outfit Health has a secret. And no, I didn’t catch them giving handjobs in a sauna, much as I would’ve liked to (That’s you, guy in the blue hat.) Instead, it’s that their Classic Rawk guitars, videogame sound effects and vocoder whisperings actually exist in support melodies and song structures, not in spite of them. This, blessedly, makes their finished product more than just your usual head-thrashing, parent-conniptioning run of the mill rock. This is why I was so excited to hear member John Famiglietti’s answers to our usual annoying questions about being straight.
DC residents can see them at the Black Cat on Sunday as part of the Sonic Circuits festival, and folks in select other cities can check ‘em out as they tour behind their new album “Get Color.”
The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?
John Famiglietti: Never thought about it that way. Had lots of sexual thoughts when I was real young like most people, and they were in line with what I was watching on TV.
TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?
JF: That we’re terrified of gay people.
TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?
JF: Obligations? Fuck that. You guys are on the party train all the fucking time!
Well…um is DC a good city to be gay? LA gayboyz are on the ferris wheel to funtown here.
TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?
JF: Doing fun or interesting shit without being called gay for it.
TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?
JF: Gael Garcia Bernal. Ever seen Bad Education?
TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?
JF: We rock (extremely rare these days). We have image, swagga. Cool. We sound very different from the pack.
TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?
JF: Because you might wanna turn the law machine off for a few hours. Lot of pressure your city’s gotta release, I’m sure. We provide catharsis. TNG
