Fall Cleaning
In honor of Autumn starting soon, and that fact that I’m expecting a guy at my house later this week, I started to clean my room. Every time I clean, I get distracted and I go through my old things. I ran across this letter I received from myself six months later that everyone had to write to themselves after a service trip to Mexico, right after I graduated in May 2007. As I read this, I realized how much it helped just to see words that are so hard to say out loud written on paper. I got introduced to TNG because my great friend Patty sent me a link to Happiness and Gayness, which really helped at the time. Maybe this can help you or you can send it to someone who it may help.
Dear Adam,
I hope everything is going well! How’s the future? Is it cool? Are you driving a spaceship? I hope that your job and apartment are kick ass! It is my last night in Casa Emaus so I’m writing you. Your 22nd birthday is coming up in a month or so, so I’m reminding you about things I think you need to know:
- Learn You Can’t Fix Everything - Not everything that happens that is negative needs to be fixed by you. In fact, sometimes involving yourself hurts the situation. Do what you can do, but not everything is your responsibility to fix.
- Appreciate Where You Are and The Opportunities You Are Given – Most people in the world don’t get to go to college, travel as much as you have, or get to do what you have done. Be blessed and honor what has been given to you by trying not to complain about material things you do not have.
- Love Your True Family and Friends - You have been through a lot, yet you have a great family and friends that always have and always will support you. Don’t worry about people who love to bring you down. Appreciate and spend as much time as possible with those you love, because time is precious.
- Never Forget Your Past, but Forgive It – Lots of fucked up things have happened to you. Let it go. You can’t change it so stop trying. No matter what, there is a reason you are who and where you are.
- Love Yourself and Your Life – Life is a bittersweet symphony. Love the good as well as the bad, but most of all love yourself. Love will come in time, because you deserve it.
Love always,
Adam

Let me quote from what you mentioned above;
Learn You Can’t Fix Everything – Not everything that happens that is negative needs to be fixed by you. In fact, sometimes involving yourself hurts the situation. Do what you can do, but not everything is your responsibility to fix.
–
right. sometimes it pays just to live life and enjoy it.
don’t worry about something not worth your time.
Whenever I send myself an email that I’ll be reading later, I like to close it with “I love you.” It’s kinda creepy, I know, and it is often startling when I read it later, but I think it’s not such a bad idea to send your future self positive messages.
