The People's Playlist: Drunky McDrunkerson’s Good Time Sing-Along Hour

This post was submitted by Rocky

Welcome to TNG’s new Tuesday afternoon mixtape, The People’s Playlist, where every week we choose a theme and make a playlist of songs based on that theme. Also, be sure to stay tuned for our weekly Left Turn, a special video surprise!

Afternoon, everybody! Welcome back to The People’s Playlist! When last we met two Tuesdays ago, I asked everybody to send me their favorite drunken sing-along songs and here are the results! Why don’t you pull that flask out of your desk (we all know!), and sing along with us! As usual, if you feel like we’ve missed something, feel free to sound off in the comments, and if you’d like to join in the fun, here’s the topic for next week:

This is one is for all you grown and sexy folks out there. Love makes the world go round, right? It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of. So I’m going to encourage all of us to try and make a little more this week by asking: What’s your favorite song to “make love” to? Now, I don’t mean what’s the first track on your standard Friday-night-one-night-stand mix. I’m talking champagne, bubble baths, rose petals, candles. The whole nine. (Or whips and dungeon equipment. Whatever the whole nine means to you. I don’t judge.) When you and your boo go all out (or you imagine you and boo going all out), what’s the song playing in the background?

Send your submissions to rocky@thenewgay.net by COB this Friday to get on next week’s tape. In the meantime, crank up that AC, and get to researchin’, everybody! Oh, and here’s this week’s mix for your listening pleasure. Be sure to stay put for this week’s very mercurial Left Turn. Do it to it, y’all!

Drunky McDrunkerson’s Good Time Sing-Along Hour – 8/25/09

Nina Simone – “Feeling Good” (Whitney)
Queen – “Don’t Stop Me Now” (Adam)
Pulp – “Common People” (Michael)
Journey – “Don’t Stop Believin’” (Matt’)
Eddie Money – “Take Me Home Tonight” (Jolly)
Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” (Jack)
Neil Diamond – “Sweet Caroline” (Kareem)
Bon Jovi – “Livin’ On a Prayer” (Hans)
Cranberries – “Ode To My Family” (Rocky)
Garth Brooks – “Friends in Low Places” (Zack)
Elton John – “Bennie and The Jets” (Gem)

And now this week’s Left Turn. Adam’s suggestion this week reminded me that my friend, Houtan, recently returned from abroad with a six volume DVD set of Queen videos and performances. To say it’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen would be the understatement of the century. Here’s my absolute favorite video, “Play The Game.” If you’re having a rotten day, let shirtless, sweaty Freddie Mercury take the pain away, right before he freaks your mind out with some limited (but amazing) special effects. This is a good one, guys.

And that’s that. Until next week! XO

OMG!!! I know everyone of these and have sung them sober and drunk on more occasions than I know. I would also like to suggest “Cotton Eyed Joe”. I don’t know who did the original because I’ve never actually heard the band over the trashed Coloradians I used to hang out with! Love the column!! SJ
