Event Details: DC Weekend Preview: Back to School Edition - :

back-to-schoolIt’s that time of year, boys and girls. The days are getting shorter, the skirts and pants will soon be getting longer and the children are all heading back to school. The only way you wouldn’t know this, in fact, is if you have somehow managed to avoid every TV, computer and magazine in the world. This is the time of year where I get really nostalgic – like, really nostalgic. All I want to do is pack up my stuff and go back to school – not college, or high school, or even middle school, but straight up elementary school. I think it has something to do with the uncomplicated nature of life back then and not having to pay my own rent. Anyway, enough about me. Even if you’re not heading back to school this week, everyone deserves some fun events to celebrate the weekend. And here are just a few…

Tonight

  • Learn something new about the history of the gay rights movement and religion as Nick Benton, a contributor to Smash the Church, Smash the State: The Early Years of Gay Liberation drops by Lambda Rising Bookstore for a free event. Details: Lambda Rising Bookstore, 1625 Connecticut Ave NW, 6:30 p.m., Free.
  • Support the HRC and relax after a hard day of work at the HRC’s monthly community night at HALO. Details: HALO, 1435 P Street, NW, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Friday

  • Celebrate the official start of the weekend with your friends here at TNG at this month installment of Homo/Sonic at the Black Cat. Details: Black Cat Mainstage, 9:30 p.m., All Ages, $10.

Saturday

  • Get over your TNG-induced hangover with some TNG-sponsored fun in the park. Details: Kalorama Park, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • If you’re a lady who’s ever wanted to learn to be a DJ, then school really is in session for you this weekend, as DJ’s K la Rock and Junebullet of The First Ladies DJ Collective lead a Ladies’ DJing 101 class at Lace this Saturday. Details: Lace DC, 214 Rhode Island Ave, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., $25, Tickets (advance sales only) can be purchased online by August 28.
  • Local DC band Imperial China returns to town and plays Comet Ping Pong this weekend – show a trio of hometown boys some love! Details: Comet Ping Pong, 5037 Connecticut Ave, NW (corner of Connecticut and Nebraska), 8:00 p.m.

the lack of information on your site about the stabbing of two transgender women in the district yesterday, in broad daylight, is very telling.

I am sure most of you have heard of the double stabbing that happened on last night here in NW DC near the offices of T.H.E. One young lady only 21 years old, a client of T.H.E’s and HIPS Joshua Mack known to us a “Na Na Boo” was killed. In response to this attack T.H.E. is in the process of organizing a candlelight vigil to be held tomorrow night at 6:30pm at the site of the incident 209 Q ST NW. We are asking that all community members come out to show their support and condemn this recent violence and urge the community to come forward with any leads. The police are offering a $25,000 reward in this case. Please spread the word. Thank you
