Ask a Straight Girl: Chrissie Hynde

This post was submitted by Zack Rosen

CHDon’t get me wrong: I have been into The Pretenders for a long time. The ubiquity of singles like “Brass in Pocket” and “Middle of the Road” is due to their quality and catchy timelessness, no matter how many banks decide to bastardize the former in their commercials. All that said, I get the impression that their frontwoman Chrissie Hynde would bash my face in with a wrench if I so much as took a parking spot from her. Her take-no-shitness is evident in every line she sneers, which is why I have no objections to the below interview where she answers some of our questions about being straight. Normally I would wish that a subject gave slightly longer answers or felt like they had obligations to the gay community, but here I’ll just let it be. She’s Chrissie Hynde, she’s big on animal rights, and far be it for me to say she’s done anything wrong.

DC residents can check out Chrissie and the gang tonight at The Warner Theatre with Cat Power and Juliette Lewis. (Yes, that Juliette Lewis.) Everyone else should check out their tour schedule.)

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Chrissie Hynde: When I was about 17

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

CH: Never thought about it

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

CH: None

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

CH: Living among meat-eaters.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

CH: No one I have met.

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

CH: Avoid everybody.

TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?

CH: To dance and feel fucking great!TNG
