latinoartThe DC Center will host a one-night-only celebration of Latino art and culture this Friday at the GALA Hispanic Theatre in Columbia Heights.

Latino Art in the City,” featuring musicians, dancers, and visual artists, will serve as fundraiser for the DC Center’s arts and cultural programs. Performers will include Zarzuela Di Si, Maru Montero Dance Company, and Scott Beard, noted pianist and professor of music at Shepherd University.

Funding will go towards programs like CenterArts, which provides a space for local GLBT artists to share their work with our community. CenterArts is currently hosting “Member,” an exhibit featuring the works of J. Aiden Simon, the cover subject of this week’s Metro Weekly.

The DC Center’s mission is to celebrate, strengthen, and support community among the GLBT residents and organizations of Metropolitan Washington, DC.

Zarzuela Di Si’s mission is to produce high quality zarzuela for the Washington, DC area audiences. They will present standard and non-standard zarzuela, and Spanish opera, both in traditional and non-traditional settings.

From humble beginnings in church basements and school gymnasiums, Maru Montero Dance Company has grown into the premier Latin dance company in the Washington, D.C. area. Although its roots are in Mexican folk dance, the company also performs modern Latin dance, including mambo, cha cha and salsa and dances from many other Latin American and the Caribbean countries.
