It didn't happen for me until college, but especially in higher ed, the ability to find a liberal or accepting group of friends is finally an option. Those friends, for me, were like, "Gay? Cool. Bum me a smoke." I'd love to speak to some gay baby boomers about coming out in the 60's, or folks who came out earlier, what a different experience.
