Well, it’s officially the summer, isn’t it? As the temperature and humidity level continue to climb, the more it seems our brains want to turn themselves off. This is probably why “Summer Blockbusters” are such a phenomenon; we just want to relax in the air conditioning and see things go boom, because it would require too much effort to do anything else. But, as this weekend in the District proves, just because the Dog Days have begun, it doesn’t mean you can’t be stimulated…at least intellectually. With the Captial Fringe Festival continuing and other artsy events going on this weekend, there’s no excuse to catch a little culture in DC over the next few days.
Tonight
- Kick the weekend off with some summer tunes and interesting people at TNG’s “Sound of Summer” Party at Solly’s. Details: Solly’s U Street Tavern, 1942 11th St, NW (11th and U St), 8:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m., 21+, Free.
- My Fabulous Sex Life by local artist Brent Stansell continues its run this weekend with shows tonight and Sunday. Details: July 16 at 5:15pm, July 19 at 9:30pm @ The Shop (at Fort Fringe ), 610 L St., NW, $15.
- Another show at Capital Fringe, Kevin Thorton’s Sex, Dreams & Self Control, debuted last night and runs through the weekend. Details: July 16 at 6:30pm, July 17 at 10:00pm, July 18 at 7:00pm, July 19 at 3:30pm @ The Goethe Institut, 812 Seventh Street, NW, $15.
Friday
- Join SpeakeasyDC for a trip through the 7 Deadly Sins by checking out The Sin Show tonight. Details: The Mountain – at Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, 900 Massachusetts Ave NW, $15.
Saturday
- Enjoy a free reading and discussion by author M.W. Moore courtesy of our friends over at Lambda Rising Bookstore. Details: Lambda Rising Bookstore, 1625 Connecticut Ave NW, 6:30 p.m., Free.
- Sheldon Scott’s one man show, Self-Service, continues it’s run at Fringe this weekend as well. Details: Warehouse Next Door, 1021 7th Street, NW, 9:00 p.m., $15.
Sunday
- End the weekend on a lighter note by checking out the Come Out Laughing Tour when it drops by the Comedy Factory in Baltimore. Details: The Comedy Factory, 36 Light Street, B’more MD, 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., Reservations: 410.547.7798, $17, with a portion to benefit GLCCB.
