If you only count June, July and August as the summer, then we are right in the middle of summer, which saddens and excites me. I’m saddend because then the warm weather is going away ( though I’m not sure it ever arrived in Chicago). But it excites me because Chicago is beautiful in the fall! We should enjoy the summer while it’s here so here so here are some events to keep your weekend busy!

Thursday July 16
- Join Women & Children First and The Chicago Foundation for Women in a special event featuring writer, director, and producer Hyatt Bass (75 Degrees in July), reading from her new novel, In The Embers. Women and Children First, 5233 N. Clark St., Free, 7:30 pm.
Friday July 17
- The New American Review features lovely ladies in live music burlesque sets and old school circus and sideshow performances including, but absolutely not limited to, fire eating, disappearing acts, circus peanuts mischief and hula hoop high jinks. No Exit, 6970 Glenwood, $20 (2 for $30), 10pm.
- Women & Children First is hosting a party celebrating the newest release for Judith Valente to celebrate her new release, “Discovering Moons”. Valente’s poems are deeply rooted in the everyday world, yet transport readers to a place in the soul, a place C.S. Lewis once described as, “the real, real world. Women and Children First, 5233 N. Clark St., Free, 7:30 pm.
Saturday July 18
- Mary’s Attic, right above Hamburger Mary’s, is hosting the Bailiwick Repertory and their delightful cabaret-style satire BOMBS AWAY!… a crazily comic depiction of Dr. Barry Mishkin, America’s foremost Broadway musicologist who has amassed an amazing collection of scenes and numbers cut from Broadway’s classic musicals. Mary’s Attic, 5400 N Clark, $15, 7pm.
- CHICKago Social is a huge outdoor party for women which features headliner Melissa Ferrick . Also featuring Edie Carey, Martha Berner, Daphne Willis, and DJ Dave. Parking lot across the street from T’s, 5025 N. Clark St., $10 in advance, $15 @ door, 3pm.
- The 41st Annual Sheffield Garden Walk & Festival is sponsored by the Sheffield Neighborhood Association (SNA), a non-profit community organization. The “Summer’s Best Festival” features self-guided tours of more than 90 Gardens, guided Architectural Tours, live entertainment by some of Chicago’s and North America’s finest bands, food and drink, and activities for children at the Kids Corner. Webster and Sheffield, $6, $10 after 3pm, 10am.
- Douglas Dawson Gallery is hosting the HRC in a benefit wine tasting. The night will be filled with art, updates on the current happenings with HRC, information on the Gala and ticket purchasing, as well as a wine tasting from local wine shop, Wine Styles. Wine tasted at the event will be available for purchase, with 10% of all sales being donated back to the HRC, and a wine tasting for 10 people in the shop will be raffled off at the event. - Women and Children first present “Sappho’s Salon: A Provocative Night of Lesbian Diversions”. This installment of their popular salon night for lesbians and their friends features visual artist and disability rights activist Riva Lehrer, and musical act Emily White. Includes wine and food. Women and Children First, 5233 N. Clark St., $7-$10 donation, 7:30 pm.
Sunday July 19
- The Spot present Diva Brunch: The Scooty & JoJo Variety Brunch Hour. Hosted by the ever-surprising, enterprising, entertainment team of Scooty and JoJo (Scott Bradley and Jonny Stax), DIVA BRUNCH will feature a new lineup of guest divas each week, including local cabaret talent, club performers, and stars of Chicago’s musical theatre world. The Spot, 4437 N Broadway, $35, 11am and 1pm.
- Signs of the Apocalypse/Rapture, a curatorial survey by Front Forty Press offers a provocative look into current trends that blur the line between annihilation and euphoria in contemporary art, thought, and sound. This dynamic exhibition presents diverse and engaging imagery from over thirty well-respected local and international contemporary artists working in a variety of mediums. Opening Reception at Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S. Cornell Avenue, Free, 3pm.
- Neighborhood Festival presents the Chinatown Summer Fair. The will be A Lion Dance procession at 1:00 p.m. which starts at the Main Stage (23rd St and Wentworth Ave) with Asian cultural entertainment and a Music Stage (Wentworth Ave and 24th Pl) on the hour. The fair will also include taste of Chinatown’s many restaurants, local unique gift shops, Chinese art’s and craft’s exhibit, a children area and street vendors with an array of merchandise for a day long family event. Wentworth Ave from Cermak Rd to 24th Pl., Free, 10am.
