Boston’s full of little block parties and festivals in the summer, and all the local bands (and locals) come out to play. I’d spend some time walking around your neighborhood, because not everything is as well advertised as the Somerville Fest, the don’t-miss event of the weekend.

Thursday

  • Paula Poundstone is performing in Ptown this Thursday. She had this one stand-up performance that used to be on TV all the time, and there was this bit about pop-tarts I found strangely hilarious…just really the way she says pop-tarts…whoa, I just found it on youtube. And I just watched it at work. Make a weekend of it before the summer’s over, and go camping if you can’t find a room. Madeira Room at Vixen, Provincetown, MA. $35, tickets are available at the door, or call 508.487.6424 to purchase.

Friday

  • Dyke Night presents Menage a Trois at the Milky Way, now three nights a month. (That seems really confusing to me, but I confirmed that it’s definitely happening this Friday.) Kristen Korpos is DJing. Milky Way Lounge, 284 Amory Street, Jamaica Plains, MA, Near the Stonybrook T Stop.
  • The real highlight of this weekend is ArtBeat! hosted by the Somerville Arts Council. There’s a whole schedule of events if you go to the website, but my recommendations for Friday night are to catch the bands Jenny Dee and the Delinquents at 7:30, Magic Magic at 8:30, and then stop by the Black Hole Robot Dance Party.  Davis Square, Somerville, MA, 5 pm- 10 pm.

Saturday

  • ArtBeat! continues with a whole host of bands and events lined up. I’d be interested to see the Balkan dancing and the Holey Moleys, which are described on the website as falling into the “doom folk” genre. There’s some sort of robot exhibition going on all day; I really have no idea what that means but I’d imagine it’ll be at least an ironic good time. At 2 pm, the parade kicks off, which features “robots, space cadets” and “eco-friendly designers.” I love Davis Square. And while you’re there, may as well go to extremely queer-friendly Diesel Cafe to grab some coffee (check out the hot servers) and take some photo booth pictures.  Davis Square, Somerville, MA, starts around noon through around 5 pm.

First time here? See what we're all about... Get involved... Send us a tip!...
