It’s here. St. Pete Pride is upon us. The weekend is going to be filled with parties, a parade, backyard barbecues, and more.
I know some people think Pride is lame, but it’s still a part of our history and culture. Getting together with a few thousand like-minded people can be fun.
Here are a couple official events you might like if you feel like crossing the bridge, plus some events closer to home. If the offerings seem a little sparse, don’t worry. GaYbor is planning their own special Pride week running from June 29 to July 4th. More about that will be coming soon.
Today
Prepare to leave your logical, adult cynicism behind for a night as Cirque Du Soleil’s Saltimbanco blows your mind. The show combines theatre, circus acts, and haunting music to create a unique vision (or at least as unique as all of Cirque Du Soleil’s other shows). The show plays through July 5. St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, 7 p.m., $40 and up, open to all ages.
The ethereal godfather of goth, Peter Murphy, will be performing his classic dark wave at Jannus Landing tonight. Zip yourself into your best black and head out, then follow the fans in a storming of The Castle, which should be interesting, considering how bright and peppy the usual Castle Thursday crowd is. 7 p.m., Jannus Landing, 205 2nd Street, St. Pete, $25 and 10 p.m., 2004 North 16th Street, Ybor, $4 (cover is more for the 18-20 crowd).
Friday
There will be loads of laughs at Laughter in Paradise, a night of comedians from Logo’s “Laughing Matters: Next Gen.” Gloria Bigelow, Edison Apple, and Amy Tee will keep you in stitches. Tradewinds Resort, 5500 Gulf Boulevard, St. Pete, 8 p.m., $30.
Saturday
If you feel like venturing into the sweltering Florida sunlight, then head to the St. Pete Pride parade and street festival, which has more than 250 vendors. Live bands will be playing througout the day. If you’re lucky, someone who lives in the area will invite you to a barbecue, otherwise there’s Georgie’s Alibi, which serves up some good American fare or the food carts set up amongst the vendor booths. The parade promenade line up is at Georgie’s Alibi at 9 a.m. and continues down 3rd Avenue and winds around until it ends at 20th Street. The street festival will be along Central Avenue between 21st Street and 28th Street starting at 11 a.m. Free and family friendly.
Sunday
Celebrate the release of her new CD, “Set it Free,” with Christie Lenee and the FunkGrass Groove and Jonny Jenaro adding some of his own soulful support, will be performing at Skipper’s Smokehouse. Also playing will be The Hip Abduction and Laura Reed. If you like funky, energetic jazz, this would be a good night to come out. If you don’t have $10, then head to the after party at Sacred Grounds, instead. Skipper’s Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, 5 p.m., $10. Sacred Grounds, 4819 East Busch Boulevard, 7 p.m., one drink minimum.
