Event Details: SLC Events 6/25 - 7/2 - :

Here’s what’s going on between June 25 and July 2 in Salt Lake City.  Suggestions or FYIs should be sent to slc@thenewgay.net.  Have FuN and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!

Thursday

• The Utah Arts Festival begins its four-day outdoor event at Library and Washington Squares.  This year’s festival will bring hundreds of visual and performing artists, more than a dozen culinary talents and over 80,000 people from around the state and around the world.  Details: 200 S 400 E, Salt Lake City.  Noon to 11:00 pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Adults are $10 per day, or $30 for all four days.  Visit their website for a schedule of events and performers.

• Former SLC Mayor Rocky Anderson headlines Torture Accountability Action Day events at Washington Square.  Music by Shades of Gray and Emma’s Revolution.  Support truth, accountability, and global justice by showing up, speaking out, and getting involved.  Details: 451 S State St, Salt Lake City.  Additional info available here.  5 pm.

• When Corporations Rule the World author and Positive Futures Network co-founder David Korten will make an appearance at Sam Weller’s Bookstore.  There he will talk about his new book, Agenda for a New Economy, and share his thoughts on how to foster community-based economies that meet real needs.  Details: 254 S Main St, Salt Lake City.  (801) 328-2586.  7:00 – 9:00 pm.

• Whether with a partner or flying solo, join the Temple Squares to learn basic square dancing techniques.  The first of three introductory events for GLBT folks and their friends, attendees don’t need any experience or dancing talent to attend. Friday

• Ride en mass with your fellow cyclists and assert your right to the road with Critical Mass.  This event has no predetermined route and goes at a fairly leisurely pace.  This Friday’s theme will be “SHORT SHORT SHORTS.”  Details:  Meet up at 5:30 pm, Gallivan Plaza, 239 S Main St, Salt Lake City.  Recurs on the last Friday of every month.

• Signed and Numbered, the cutest little print and poster shop on Broadway, will exhibit “The Birds”, a collection of bird-related prints from artists around the country.  The opening reception’s already happened, but you can catch these works until July 8.  Details:  300 S 221 E, Salt Lake City, located under Slowtrain records.  (801) 596-2093.  Check their site for hours.

• Day Two of the Utah Arts Festival

Saturday

• Support local businesses and celebrate sustainable living by attending the Downtown Farmers’ Market/Art and Craft Market.  Over 250 vendors will be at Pioneer Park for the event.  Details: 200 S 300 W, Salt Lake City.  More information available from Downtown SLC.  8 am to 1 pm, recurring every Saturday between June 13 and October 17th.

• Day Three of the Utah Arts Festival.

Sunday

• Catch more local goods and services from area farmers and entrepreneurs at the People’s Market.  Details: International Peace Garden, 1060 S 900 W.  10 am to 3 pm.  Recurs every Sunday from June 14 until October 25.

• Day Four of the Utah Arts Festival.

Tuesday

• Join Beyond Black and White (BBW) at the Downtown Library to discuss works of art, literature, and other media with your fellow homos.  BBW is inclusive of all GLBT individuals and their friends.  This week, BBW will discuss Ray Bradbury’s Illustrated Man.  It’s a fairly brisk read, so please read through it if you plan to attend.  Details: Downtown Library, Salt Lake City.  7:00 pm.  For additional information contact Alex Larson (801) 815-8757.

Wednesday

• If the skies are clear on Wednesday night, head up to the South Physics Bldg (http://www.map.utah.edu/index.jsp?find=10) at the University of Utah for a Star Party.  Check out the planets, galaxies, star clusters and all the things that can be seen through a telescope, half an hour after sundown.  For additional information, click here or contact Cierra Blair at (801) 792-5013 or cierra.blair@hsc.utah.edu.
