Ask a Straight Girl: Nina Persson

This post was submitted by Zack Rosen

Though former Cardigans vocalist Nina Persson will forever be remembered for the silky croon she brought to songs like Love Fool, her career did not end with the ’90s. She is currently touring with her new band A Camp, whose sophomore album “Colonia” was just released with contributions from members of Smashing Pumpkins, Guided by Voices and Joan as Policewoman. Though Persson’s brightest moment of fame is from the decade of Clueless and Daria, A Camp’s sound is rooted firmly in the airy balladeering of artists like The Sundays and Petula Clark and is all the better for it.

A Camp plays tomorrow, May 27th, at the 930 Club (with queer opener Gentlemen Reg) but non-DC residents can check them out in lots of other US cities over the coming weeks.

Persson was nice enough to answer some of my questions about being straight. You can check out the full interview, and an A Camp video, below.

The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?

Nina Perrson: When I was about 7 or 8, a girl I used to hang out with wanted to “play doctor” with me, or rather, I think it was “gynecologist” she wanted to play.  I felt awkward about it and went home.

TNG: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?

NP: That we’re boring and scared and not fabulous!

TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?

NP: To help the gay community combat stereotyping and to keep musical theatre alive in the modern world!

TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?

NP: To always try to stay away from gorgeous girls, and to fight for the coveted jobs of stylist and personal assistant.

TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?

NP: I’ll pick someone famous instead of one of my cute girl friends, so… I’d pick Charlotte Gainsbourg!

TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?

NP: That I’m into the grand gestures of old-skool entertainment.

TNG: Finally, why should Washington, DC come out and see you play tonight?

NP: Because we’re fucking fantastic! TNG

Thanks for the heads up about this, I had no idea Nina Persson was in a new band since The Cardigans, I’ll be going tomorrow night!

Both A Camp albums are terrific…if you liked the last two Cardigans albums, you will love A Camp!
