pegramOn Wednesday, May 27 mothertongue features the poetry of DC native Lisa Pegram and DC Youth Slam Poets, plus an open mic.

Lisa Pegram is a poet, songwriter and arts educator.  She is the 2009 Team Director and was three-time Head Coach of the DC team for the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival. She has led youth development programs for the Latin American Youth Center, Asian American LEAD and Multicultural Community Services. Her poetry and essays have been published in Bum Rush the Page (Random House, 2001), Beyond the Frontier (Black Classic Press, 2002), and Beats Rhymes and Life (Random House, 2007). She currently works as a songwriter and youth development consultant, leading writing workshops, arts-integration teacher trainings and directing the CentroNia Saturday Arts Leadership Program for Girls.

Proceeds from the event will go to sending the 2009 DC Youth Slam Team, coached by Meg Harrigan and Jabari Exum, to Chicago on July 14-19 to compete in the 12th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival.  An audition slam for the 2009 DC Youth Slam Team is being held on from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM on May 31 at Eatonville Restaurant (2121 14th St. NW).  All DC residents between 13-19 are eligible to compete (Non-College Students).  For more information or to register, contact Lisa Pegram at lisap@SOLySOUL.com.

mothertongue is a community-based organization that works to create a safe space where all women and girls may speak freely and powerfully and have their creative and artistic voices heard. Through regular women’s spokenword events and writing/performance workshops, mothertongue encourages women to use their voices, art, talents, and skills to build just and inclusive communities.
