Your Morning Upper: When “Supermodel” Meant Something

This post was submitted by ejacksonindc

Mornings suck. So every morning TNG brings you a fun video to ease the pain.

There weren’t any of the stereotypical indications that I would turn out to be gay, but the one there was was off the flippin chart. I played sports and appeared to like women, but when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was the Fashion Editor at Vogue, a job held, at the time, by Andre Leon Talley, (FYI-He introduced the First Lady to Jason Wu. I’m giddy) a long-time insider and confidant of the magnificent Anna Wintour . I loved everything high fashion, especially this video. There was a time when my entire life was built around CNN’s Style with Elsa Klensch and VH1′s Fashion Television with Jeanne Beker. Klensch was the standard barer for fashion journalism on television. She was seldom seen on camera because, for her, it was all about the clothing and the designers. Beker was new, fresh and hip. She was the Elle to Klensch’s Vogue, the pret-a-porter to her haute couture. I loved Fashion Television because Beker provided a gay teenage boy with highly coveted access to the mythical creatures in the fantastic world of fashion when, by Linda Evangelista!, “Supermodel” meant something. Ms. Evangelista is the source of the maxim, “I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.” I still watch the Fashion Television podcasts, and, apparently, when I found out Isaac Mizrahi will be hosting the new design show on Bravo, my partner said he heard me “squeal” with glee all the way upstairs.

Beefcake alternate version of video.
