Ask A Straight Guy: Presidents’ of The United States of America’s Andrew McKeag

The Presidents have watched "Primary Colors" one too many times...
“Millions of peaches… peaches for me…” Remember that? The Presidents of the United States of America grated themselves into public consciousness in the mid-90s with a series of novelty singles that you have most assuredly not forgotten about. Like many other bands initially given Doctor Demento status (See also: They Might Be Giants) there career has continued slightly below the radar and their songs have deepened to something closer to maturity. That is, in the sense that your crazy uncle who brings home whoopie cushions and tells sex jokes is mature. The trio were at DC’s 930 Club last night but I did not receive these answers in time to print them on Friday. Luckily, POTUSA is currently undergoing a country-wide tour that will give you many chances to throw fuzzy, Georgia-based fruit at them.
Their vocalist Andrew McKeag was nice enough to answer some of my questions about being straight. The full interview is below, and below that you can check out a POTUSA mixtape.
The New Gay: When did you first realize you were straight?
Andrew McKeag: When none of my mother’s gay friends turned me on. Seriously!
The New Gay: What is your least favorite stereotype about straight people?
AM: That we’re having sex all the time, 24/7. Errrr… could it be that I have that backwards?
TNG: What obligations, if any, do you feel that you have to the gay community?
AM: Its high time that all straight people step up to the plate and do their level best to make gay people straight! I mean, if Ted Haggard can be “adjusted”…??? What a freak, btw.
TNG: What are the biggest challenges faced by a straight person in today’s culture?
AM: Monogamy.
TNG: If you had to “go gay” for one member of the same sex, who would it be?
AM: If I must…. Jimi Hendrix. Go ahead, Google pics of his plaster cast... you know you wanna!
TNG: Given the seemingly endless number of “indie” artist in existence today, how do you think you set yourself apart from the crowd?
AM: We’re actually the weirdest band on the planet- we simply don’t fit in any category… and we’re OLD. Like twice as old as most “cool” bands, so right there- we set ourselves apart from the crowd. Never mind the jumping, meowing, songs about animals & dune buggies, etc.
TNG: Finally, why should people come out and see you play?
AM: Because there ain’t nothing else going on- trust me, I checked the local papers! TNG
