Poetry: Stopping by CVS on A Rainy Evening

I went to fill a prescription last week and got a very pleasant surprise: the easter candy has already made it to the shelves of my neighborhood drug store. In honor of my favorite confection of all time, I re-wrote a poem I penned in high school to the beat of Robert Frosts’ “Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening.” (And for anyone who cares, I preserved the original’s AABA/BBCB rhyme scheme.) I hope you all enjoy and don’t judge me too harshly on the content to follow:

Which treat this is I’m glad to know
It’s chicken-shaped and all aglow
in rainbow hues. (How very queer!)
A resplendent spectrum of marshmallow

I hold it up and shed a tear
at the fleeting pleasure, sad and dear.
Like autumn leaves or birthday cake
Peeps’ joys are known but once a year.

I give its body one brief shake
to knock off a loose sugar flake
I close my eyes and take the leap:
I have a bite and begin to quake

If my folks found out it would make them weep.
But I’m glad the christian lord had risen from the deep
It’s so hard for a Jew to admit he likes peeps.
It’s so hard for a Jew to admit he likes peeps

I love this illustration. I wish they made vegetarian peeps. I can still recall the slightly crispy texture, biting into a peep that’s been sitting in an easter basket at the foot of my bed all night long.

Oh, and the poem is a riot, too.

Bravo Zack! If you haven’t microwaved a Peep before, make it your top priority today.

Delightful! Although there are alternatively-shaped marshmallow confections available for other seasons, Peeps are the tastiest.

Should they linger long enough at your house to become dry, you can revive them by soaking 1 Peep in a shot of vodka in a glass ramekin. It’s sort of like a jello shot.
