Save The Date: Homo/Sonic w/ My Dear Disco on Feb. 21

Event Details: Save The Date: Homo/Sonic w/ My Dear Disco on Feb. 21 - :

This post is submitted by TNG founder Zack, who has barely recovered from the last Homo/Sonic.

Like a couple having sex in the cobalt bathroom, we here at TNG don’t waste any time in getting down to business. Though the last Homo/Sonic dance party is barely cold, we are proud to tell you that our next one is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 21st at the mainstage of the Black Cat.

Even more excitingly, we have booked a band to play the early portion. They are called My Dear Disco, they hail from Ann Arbor and their lead singer is a super cute queer girl. MDD has the ability to whip crowds into a teeming, foaming frenzy so we hope you will come out to see them.

Just to be sure, we included a My Dear Disco mixtape below the fold.

Gosh, I need to get to Cobalt more…

Why would you schedule this the exact same night as Mixtape/Taint???

Glad you brought that up, Anonymous. We don’t really autonomy in when we schedule Homo/Sonics. The Black Cat lets us know when they have gaps in their schedule and we fill them. It sucks that we have to compete with a night as fun as mixtaint (and divide the crowd) but I figured it woudl be better to have it then than not at all.

On the bright side, though, this could be a nice chance to prove just how big the alternative queer crowd in DC really is.

No, that just sucks for everyone.

Let me also add that the Mix/Taint folks didn’t communicate with us when planning their event, and we didn’t communicate with them. Lesson Learned #1: Communicate.

Secondly, we confirmed the date for H/S and confirmed the band before we learned about Mix/Taint. We immediately contacted the Mix/Taint crew to see if anything could be done, but everyone’s plans were already set. As Zack said, we take whatever opportunities the Black Cat gives us, and backing out on a confirmed date is a great way to ruin a business relationship with the seemingly only venue capable of handling our audience.

I think this will provide a great service to DC’s queer community: a multiplicity of alternative choices on one night. Who would have thought we’d ever have such an embarrassment of riches?

(Oh, and just be happy that Blowoff isn’t the same night, too!)

I’m not affiliated with Mixtape or Taint. However, I do know that the Mixtape party follows a regular schedule, so that date was known well in advance.

I would just like to see us foster a good alt-gay community in DC and not put on competing events. I enjoy both Homosonic and I enjoy Mixtape. We should support both events with better planning.

Agreed. We don’t want to schedule competing events, either, but it’s bound to happen. We have nearly no say over what dates are available at the Black Cat, so it’s not like we could simply ask for the following weekend.

The Black Cat is primarily a live music venue, and we’re lucky that they’re willing to allow us to take over their main stage once in a while when there are holes in their calendar.

In this case, a fun, queer-lady-fronted band was available to perform on the same night that the Black Cat had a hole in their schedule. We jumped at the opportunity to work with My Dear Disco and lock in another Homo/Sonic.

It’s unfortunate that some people will be forced to choose between these two conflicting events, but sadly we don’t have much control over this.

What we need is an alternative queer venue of our own, so we don’t have to settle for the scraps of other venue’s calendars.

If anyone has any experience opening a bar/restaurant/club and would like to share it with me, please contact me at michael@thenewgay.net.
