Politics: “Who Throws a Shoe? Honestly!?”

It’s hard to believe that in just over a month, our beloved muppet president George W. Bush will pack up his Middle East for Dummies books and Christian-themed flasks and leave our lives forever. Bush just made his last trip to Iraq, a bittersweet moment in a country where he has murdered hundreds of thousands, but must feel kind of like an abusive, alcoholic uncle at this point.
I must admit, I got quite nostalgic upon watching an Iraqi journalist take off his shoes at a press conference and lob them at Bush’s skull. Ever the athlete, Bush managed to dodge both of them, which is probably lucky for the now-imprisoned journalist. And people from Gaza to Wonkette are celebrating and demanding his release. You can even play an online game in which you beat the shit of of Dubbya with a loafer.
This journalist is now my personal hero, because he did what billions of people around the globe have wanted to do for eight years. As someone who has spent time living in the Middle East and living with Arabs here in America, I can tell you that throwing a shoe is about a nasty an insult as one can get. So before Cheney personally executes this man, let’s all join him in raising a glass towards George W. Bush – and then chucking that glass at his head. Here’s to eight years of killing Iraqis, Afghanis and Palestinians; oppressing minorities and poor people at home; making the U.S. the second least popular nation on earth, after your BFF, Israel; making billions of dollars for your oil buddies and the military-industrial complex, while sinking our economy; and generally being a total douche.
Who’s next? Step right up and launch one at that bastard.
First time here? See what we're all about... Get involved... Send us a tip!...

thank you for this shallow analysis, i guess the rainbow is over for everyone but Israelis, cause the poor schlub selling burekas in the carmel shuk doesnt deserve happiness either. not everything wrong in the middle east has to do with Israel and being this flippant about it paints you as an idiot and does the reading public a disservice by dumbing down the complexity of the issues going back hundreds of years.
in just over a month…George W. Bush will pack up…leave our lives forever.
Unfortunately, the aftereffects of his ineptitude will be felt for years, beginning with the Great Depression II which is just beginning.
I’m not sure what this tirade has to do with being “the new gay”, but I found it quite offensive. Doesn’t this rant belong on dailykos or some other left leaning, Bush bashing blog? I’ve come to expect better quality from thenewgay.
Bush and his ilk are an embarrassment to the human race. Thrown shoes are mild compared to what he deserves.
I give him credit for dexterity and reflex; but then again, he is quite practiced at dodging things. Might be worth wearing some heavy-duty, calked logging boots to the next press conference.

Honey, the whole world is a Bush bashing blog nowadays. (Most) people have finally woken up.
What this proves to me is Bush better watch his back…for the rest of his life.
Honestly, I felt bad for Dubya. Although I have been so angry with him for the past eight years and will remain so for a long time to come, I thought how frightened he must have been until he realized it was just a pair of shoes. I wouldn’t want him to feel the terror of thinking it was a bomb or something.
As far as “getting what he deserves,” that’s honestly not up to me. He’ll reap the “rewards” of his actions because of the choices he made – not because I think he should get a certain karmic bitch slap.
i think this post is quite inappropriate. while i am not a fan of gwb, he is president of the united states and a human. i think he deserves some level of respect due to his status as both. i don’t think there is anyone i would throw a show at. if gwb is to be held accountable for his failings, let’s do it in court or through history, not by physically assaulting him. cheering on someone who attempted to assault someone, no matter how much you loath that someone, is not constructive.

I want you in my theater company.
This post is rather insipid and inane. There are no constructive arguments and it’s more of a child’s rant than a productive posting. The journalist throwing his shoes clearly had a temper tantrum and instead of engaging the President in a lively dialogue, decided to resort to physical violence (yes, throwing things is violent). Commending this behavior only showcases one’s immaturity and lack of common decency.
And making a sweeping blanket statement by saying Bush murdered those people is grossly inappropriate. While I’m sure no one condones that behavior, myself included, it takes two to tango. Insurgents and terrorists in the Middle East certainly have not been making Bush’s, or any Western aid agency’s, job any easier.
anon – i meant shoe, of course.
People have tried reason. He doesn’t seem to respond. But look at the look on his face when he ducks the shoe — he’s engaged, he’s amused, he’s cautious, he’s thinking about how to move. This demonstrates more of a thought process than he’s demonstrated for other decisions.
It’s interesting, this post, about politics and nothing specifically gay, being on this blog. On the one hand, it’s not a commentary on gay-ness, or gay culture. But on the other hand, it is a demonstration of new gay-ness — that we, as people who identify as “new gay” care more about more than just our immediate surroundings.
If you honestly feel sorry for that man you are out of your mind.
I don’t think this post is “rather insipid and insane” at all. How can you expect a insignificant journalist to even be granted an opportunity to engage the President of the United States in “a lively dialogue”?! LOL! The simple fact that the man was forced to throw his shoes demonstrates his powerlessness to “engage” the President otherwise.
I agree with Margaret. It’s about time we see more stuff on TNG about culture and politics in general, about non-gay people, places and things. Some of us do have lives outside of Upper Fag Heights.
Inappropriate? Corey, do me a favor. The next time you think you might have something “inappropriate” to post on here, please do. While some may disagree with the position expressed in this post, it is entirely appropriate for a TNG contributor to comment on one of the biggest current international news stories. I for one have no interest in reading a blog that exists in a gay bubble, newgay or not.
As for Bush deserving our respect, I respectfully disagree. He has treated the rest of the world and his domestic opponents with nothing but contempt for 8 years. Respect is earned. To applaud someone for throwing a shoe at the president, a largely symbolic protest that could not have caused any serious injury, is a perfectly valid point of view. Just ask most people in the Middle East who, rightly or not, view the shoe tosser as a hero.
It would be wonderful to see Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzalez and Yoo brought up on charges before the World Court. But what’s the chance of that happening? I’d love it – I’d die happy if I could see it – but I doubt it will happen. The whole lot of them will die comfortably among their wealth and residual power. So what’s a few shoes thrown at them in the meantime? I could empty out the Pentagon Row DSW on them and their ilk and never be satisfied.
On the half-hours during Morning Edition on NPR, they have a “button” in which they mention something funny that happened in the news. They featured this exact story the day after it happened, and even mentioned the online game where you can do it yourself.
I’m not saying that NPR is the gold standard of decorum in journalism, but the fact that they also found some irreverent humor in this shows either their liberal/lefty slant or the fact that it’s simply really funny and completely laughable.
