What We're Listening To: TNG Intro to Hip-Hop

Following up on my recent post, “Hip Hop Hooray?“, here is an intro to Hip-Hop mixtape of tunes. I’ve included a playlist after the jump. I know I’m missing a lot, but at 38 songs, the mix was getting a little too big (and Mixwit didn’t have some of the more obscure tracks I was looking for).

BTW, if you’ve never heard Immortal Technique, check out track eleven. He has consistently rejected a major recording contract, because he refuses to soften his political message. He’s probably the best hip-hop artist you’ve never heard of.

Fun intro list! But thought I’d contribute a few. Not sure if the following songs simply were not available, but it would be a HUGE oversight to not include:

1)”T.R.O.Y (They Reminisce Over You)” by Pete Rock and CL Smooth -one of the most classic and well produced tracks in the history of Hip-Hop.

2)”I Used To Love H.E.R” by Common -an ode to Hip-Hop itself.

3)”You’re All I Need” by Method Man and Mary J. Blige

M.I.A. is a good example of one interesting direction in which the genre is heading – (world music meets old skool hip hop)

good intro to hip hop: Girl Talk’s “Feed the Animals”. Lots of hip hop vocals mixed over bits and pieces of pop tunes. Now when I work out at the Y I keep hearing the original versions of the hip hop tracks, songs I never would have bothered remembering if they hadnt been presented to me in his novel way.
