Events: GLBT Open House for Maret School – Sunday @ 2pm
Event Details: GLBT Open House for Maret School - Sunday @ 2pm - :
TNG Staff Cartoonist Maggie submits this event for your weekend consideration. It runs from 2-4pm on Sunday, at 3830 Livingston Street, NW. Details after the fold.
If you’ve been following the Obama Transition — and let’s be serious, you live in DC, of course you’ve been — you know that Maret School is one of the top three contenders for Sasha and Malia. You also know that in this city the rumors run rampant, and despite being a fine member of the Development Staff at Maret School, I know nothing more than your average Joe the [insert your own countrified adjective here].
That said, what I do know is that Maret is an incredibly open & forward thinking establishment. The School chooses a theme each year and bases the curriculum, assemblies, homework assignments, art projects, admission process, fundraising, and publications around this theme. Two years ago, the theme was “Challenging Assumptions,” last year it was “Sustainability,” and this year it is “Making a Difference,” and each year we make an effort to “gay it up.”
Math teachers are encouraged to write word problems that say things like, “Susan & Tammy are on a date. They decide to split the $44.10 check, how much does each woman owe if she is going to leave an 18% tip?” The Lower School library has multiple books portraying gay couples, including It Takes 3 to Tango. The Gay-Straight Alliance club held events in October for GLBT History Month & will be at the Prop 8 Protest on Saturday. The civil liberties class discusses Harvey Milk, english teachers include Audre Lorde in their reading requirements, and Keith Harring is studied in art.
With 9 open faculty members, 2 out students, 10 gay/lesbian parents, and countless GLBT alumni (including Craig Shniderman of Food & Friends), Maret is part of the fight to do something. Like John said, there needs to be outreach, & this Sunday, Maret is reaching out to GLBT families in the DC Metro Community with an Open House (details below). Now, I realize that majority of TNG readers are not even close to thinking about possible schools, let alone possible children, but it’s part of standing up and being a part of the larger gay community & providing a place where gay and straight parents and parents with gay and straight children can be allies.
