Uncategorized: LGBT Alaskans on Sarah Palin

TNG reader Michael Cole, who works for the Human Rights Campaign, says:

“I traveled to Wasilla two weeks ago and interviewed a ton of LGBT folks who don’t have many nice things to say about Palin (unfortunately, I didn’t meet this supposed best friend.”) Turns out, the only “choice” the folks I met made is to come out publicly against Palin.” Great job, Michael.

Sarah Palin has become a popular topic of discussion on this site, none of it complimentary. In spite of what she says, does, and holds as truth (most of which I find objectionable), I admit I’m glad she did well in the debate. While the fact that she is completely unqualified for the job is apparent to everyone who has made the most of their evolution from apes, the level of viciousness she’s inspired seems a bit much. I’m glad she’s regained her footing a bit, because now I don’t feel so bad sharing some of the funny shit people keep sending TNG about her:

Sarah Palin has a facebook page. Loved Obama’s comment.

Sarah Palin look-alikes have opportunities in the adult entertainment industry. No anal required.

Sarah Palin on advanced weapons systems: “If Canada will not stand down, I will unleash Alaska’s snowmobile army.”

Sarah Palin eviscerated by Andrew Sullivan and Bill Maher on Real Time.

I was going to say that as a gay person from Alaska, I could vouch for her lack of popularity amongst my ilk, but I suppose it kind of goes without saying… I think hardly any gay people, Alaskan or otherwise, by into her bullshit about having gay friends or whatever.

Wow, great work on the video. It’s nice to put a real human face on the criticisms and even better that it comes from those who have experienced life under her for themselves.

Just kind of curious, but why aren’t there any younger people in the video? The video seems to be confused as to what demographic it’s aiming for. It’s shot like an MTV/LOGO “Coming Out Stories”, complete with axis jumping shots, and the ‘lone guitar’ music, but then features older people.

It’s an ok video, but honestly, I wish HRC had shot the video like a ‘Jaywalking’ segment and made it funny. Funny videos go viral a lot faster than long, plodding ones.

Eric – thanks for your comments. For one, it was hard to find younger, out people in Wasilla. I interviewed one young woman but her story wasn’t as compelling as some of the others and I didn’t want to overload the piece with too many subjects.
As for humor, when I went up to Wasilla, I wasn’t exactly sure what I would find. We had hopes of bringing the funny (not actually being able to see Russia, etc.) and honestly I was a little disappointed that it didn’t work out that way. In editing, it just felt like the stuff I got from the subjects was much more serious and jokes would have felt out of place. Additionally, I have a lot of respect for the folks who talked to me (in many cases at personal risk to themselves and their livelihoods) and I decided a serious tone was going to be more effective. I do agree though that we may have had more success virally with humor but my aim was more to tell a compelling story.

BTW – Ben, thanks for posting. Hope your readers enjoy it.
