Our fantasies of indie industry employment are slowly shrinking. As a kid, I used to imagine I’d spend my college nights shuffling around some indie record or video store, but by the time I turned 18, they were all pretty much gone. I ended up working at some shitty chain video store where I had to wear tuxedo pants and cover my eyebrow ring (oh, the nineties!). Likewise, you can pretty much kiss goodbye working for any indie press outlet that hasn’t been gutted and incorporated by Gannett or some other industry goliath.

Bitch magazine, which, in order to keep publishing, needs to raise $40,000 by October 15th, deserves our saving not just so I can keep my fantasy of indie employment alive, but for upholding feminist ideals in a magazine market awash with Maxim, FHM, and dare I say it, Highlights magazine. (Sorry Highlights, your muted color schemes crushed my childhood creativity.) For real though, Bitch has slugged it out for 13 years as a nonprofit, community-supported media organization, and I for one would be super depressed to see them fold. There’s talk about organizing a D.C. fundraiser for Bitch–holla back if you’d like to get involved.
