Events: Cocks Not Blocked

Event Details: Cocks Not Blocked - :

Phase One, obvious host of Phasefest 2008, has gotten some flack for its policy that all men must have a female escort. To me, it’s more about safety than divisiveness. Guy allies or lesbros shouldn’t have too hard a time finding an escort among their friends, or just strike up a conversation with the inevitable clutch of lady smokers outside the club, and ask to walk in with them.

As it turns out, you don’t even have to do these simple things if you want to attend any of the Phasefest events scheduled this week. Meaghan, lady blogger and ardent Phase supporter, clarifies:

“Phasefest, for all intents and purposes, will be an exception to the rule. It’s a Queer music and arts festival, and as such we don’t want to limit the patron base along gender lines. The policy exists for much more specific reasons and applies to nights when people are less focused on the music and more on “cruising”. TNG guys can rest assured that they won’t be hassled at the door during Phasefest. If they show up with a gaggle of guys on any other night, there might be some issues with the doorperson and the policy, but otherwise we’re not interested in keeping TNG men or any other male allies explicitly out. Like I said in my piece linked above, it’s a matter of safety and tipping the odds in favor of the people for whom the bar was erected (no pun intended).”

Actually, as a place of public accomodation, entering Phase 1 without discrimination is a right. Unless the club converts to a private membership club, they are in violation of the DC Human Rights Act and subject to investigation, fines, etc. from the Office of Human Rights and of course private lawsuit.

    Anonymous,

You know what, I agree. It is, according to the backassward patriarchal laws of society, discriminating. AND I think it’s particularly fascinating that the only people who threaten Allen Carroll or any staff in the bar with legal recourse are the people for whom the bar was not originally intended. That is to say, straight men.

Phase 1 isn’t a petting zoo. It’s not a tourist attraction. I think it’s quite obvious why it exists, who the clientele is and should be, and why the threat of a law suit is practically laughable.

I’m as much against discrimination as anybody else, but seriously: why are so many guys pissed off that they cant go to Phase 1? I honestly think most people that take offense at this policy do so because they feel left out, not because they have a burning desire to hang out with lesbians in eastern market. Its not as if they’d lift this ban and the whole of cobalt would empty out to attend Phase’s parties. I agree that the policy seems to be in place to protect the clients from gawking straight guys, and it sounds like cool, calm male homos would have no problem getting in if they wanted to.

4 serious angry boys – if yr that hungry for some dyke in yr life, stop choking on your panties and go to a mystics game. being annoyed at this policy is like being annoyed that you aren’t allowed to carry a duffle bag around a jewelery store. just get over it and leave your bag/balls at the counter.

It’s still a step in the wrong direction.

I’m curious, then – what would be a step in the right direction?

I’m going to eventually have to burn my bra and post a picture of it on TNG or something, but srsly?!?

A step in the wrong direction?

We’re so sorry to have offended your delicate sensibilities and right to space. Here…have the rest of the free world.
