Uncategorized: GLADD: Call To Action

I would rather get a pap smear than watch FOX News. It’s like watching ignorant white frat boys talk about sexuality and politics as they laugh and high-five each other:

“Gays are so sensitive!” “Yeah (high five)!”
“Why do men dress as women sometimes?!” “I know right (high five)?!”
“Can Obama please stop telling us he’s black!? “Oh, Snap (high five)!”

Calling the station’s content “news” is like calling my kindergarten finger painting a Picasso. It’s nauseating that FOX not only holds on to its sexist, hetero-normative, racist ways, but seems to relish in it.

Yesterday GLADD released a call to action regarding a recent FOX “News” segment that mocked new America’s Next Top Model contestant, Isis, who identifies as transsexual. The segment features close-minded FOX News anchor Gregg Jarrett and Us Weekly Editor-at-Large, Ian Drew.

Throughout the video Jarrett laughs like a young child who just heard the word “boobs” said in a classroom, as Drew uses his interview with Isis in US Weekly as a platform for unnecessary, offensive commentary. Some highlights include when Jarrett emphasizes that he was “fooled” by Isis because of her female aesthetic, as if to give Isis some recognition of “accomplishment,” and when Jarrett asks Drew if Isis’ voice is “high or low.” Drew then elaborates that Isis has the “signs” of a transsexual.

“Way to go, I had a lot fun reading this in your magazine” Jarrett said to Drew, ending the segment. “No problem we had fun talking to her.” Drew replied. I’m glad these two boys had a good ‘ole time.

I saw this, and though not surprised I was still appalled. As I am a fan of the show, I looked around at forums and such to see what other reactions were, and some were fine and others were horrifying. That said, the show will most likely make a big deal out of having a transgender model, like it does with any model who has something different (plus-size (AKA normal), Aspergers, etc.).
That said, people make such big deal out of gender… so she wasn’t comfortable with her body, and lived the way she felt she needed to. Get over it. Though I am probably preaching to the choir.

America’s Next Top Model is using her as much as FOX “News”. I am not shocked by their behavior nor will I be shock by Ms. Jay and Tyra talking about the transexual and revealing how cool they are with her journey on ANTM.

She has really made a journey with her photos. Blah blah blah

    Damn I love that show.

I hope she smiles with her eyes.

    Thanks for the pap illustration.

Some press is better than none. If you know how to manage the press, then you can do a good job at exposing the truth.

P.S. Fox News is simply a lie spouting polemic playing of the ignorance and fear of its viewers for profit. Who knew the devil would be from Australia?

Sometimes I wonder what the boundary is between progress and exploitation.

Probably, there’s a real degree of “oooh, look, we can get a freak on the show” kind of attitude from producers (or just another lame attempts at getting more viewers).

However, the story of the model is probably really interesting, will freak some people out and hopefully start some interesting conversations in living rooms or among friends.

How many of those conversations actually turn into something productive is probably low, but will the trans movement, years from now, include this model in some documentary about seeing themselves on television and realizing they could make their dreams come true in their bodies of choice?
