The first boy I ever kissed, way back in high school, had on occasion taken off all his clothes and danced in just his socks on top of the bar at La Cage aux Follies in Southeast Washington D.C. While I never saw anything like this in person, there were photographs to confirm it. What seemed to me in those days rather daring and outlaw-ish now strikes me only as irredeemably sketchy – at the time this was happening, we were both sixteen years old.

I interrupt this episode of True Confessions to bring a related event announcement. While the gay strip clubs of Southeast are no more, leveled to make way for the Washington Nationals’ baseball stadium, there are those still around to remember, memorialize, and explain them. One of these is Craig Seymour, author of the memoir All I Could Bare, which recounts his days baring all to help put himself through grad school. Seymour will be appearing for a reading and talk at the D.C. Center this Thursday, June 19th as part of the Outwrite gay writers’ series. More information can be found on the D.C. Center website, and since the event is scheduled for 7 to 8:30, it will end in plenty of time to bop on over to Solly’s for the TNG “Pride Recovery” party. Come learn about one of the less-discussed byways of Washington D.C. gay history.
