Pride: Black Pride

Event Details: Black Pride - :

This post was submitted by Craig Laurance Gidney, a native Washingtonian who frequently contributes to TNG, blogs and publishes the occasional piece of fiction.

Today is the start of DC Black Pride. A five day event, it culminates in the always-fun Festival, held on this Sunday. Where I find Capital Pride staid and corporate-sponsored, Black Pride is more grassroots and vibrant. Hearing hip hop and r&b over loudspeakers is welcome respite from the usual Madonna-Kylie bombardment (not that there’s anything wrong with that sort of thing). It’s a different side of gay culture, one usually ignored by mainstream gay press.

The unique issues faced by GLTBQ of African descent are addressed in variety of workshops and panels throughout the week, and it’s an uplifting feeling to see 1000s of GLTBQ African Americans from all over the country. Plus it’s just plain. My brother and I had a blast last year. Stop by Francis Field 2425 N St, NW on Sunday afternoon before heading to Taint.

both “gay press” organizations (the blade and mw) run extensive features on black pride before and after the event.
