Lesbian Royalty Coming to Town

Stephanie is doing a great job of keeping TNG filled with interesting content.

Every now and then, particularly when there are torrential downpours and nature stops me dead in my grocery-shopping tracks, I do what I like to call “music cruising” – a time when I actively look for new music that I might be interested in. Normally, I am the type of person who relies on other people to tell me about hip, up-and-coming music, or cool shows that are coming to town. In fact, if not for other people, I’m pretty sure my iPod would be occupied by only two artists – the Spice Girls and Matchbox 20. (I’m not ashamed; I accept and appreciate my music tastes for what they are, even if they haven’t changed since middle school.)

So, about three hours into the ridiculous Sunday rain, when I had finally accepted that I would be going to neither the gym nor the grocery store, I decided to music cruise. During this time, I do things like: read the music blogs of old college friends; read Pitchfork; follow link after link after link; check out MySpace music pages; and comb through the calendars of nearby music venues. It was during this last activity that I made a profound lesbian discovery – Leisha Hailey has a band called Uh Huh Her – named after a PJ Harvey album – and they are coming to D.C. on May 14. Alice! Alice will be live, doing vocals/synth/bass in the 9:30 Club on May 14! I know that she probably hates being referred to by her small-screen name, but c’mon – it’s not like I actually consider Leisha a pill-popping, crazy talk-show host; she is, however, my favorite L Word funny girl, Alice.

Since I just heard of the band today, and iTunes only has six songs for offer, I decided to give their MySpace description as my description:

Uh Huh Her’s sound – a self-described indie electro-pop hybrid – is a unique and organic product of Hailey and Grey’s styles. “[The sound] is the evolution from our backgrounds,” Grey says. “We slammed them all together and that’s what came out.” Their music has a sultriness that crashes head on with the profound, both cosmic and carnal; it is replete with elastic bass lines, ambient synths and backbeats that will seduce to the core.

Perhaps I’m biased by prior knowledge, but when I listen to the sounds of Uh Huh Her, it does, in fact, sound like a lesbian-oriented band, if for no other reason than that they just have that mellow-yet-upbeat, pained sound that lesbians love to listen to. Anyway, I don’t really care what they sound like; I’ll be at the 9:30 Club on May 14 – it’s mother-fucking Alice Pieszecki.

these ladies played sxsw, and youtube is filled with records of lesbo pilgrimmages to the show. i particularly like the fans that pretend to be oblivious to leisha’s L word role, and just into the band for their music.
why not just a murmurs reunion tour?

Thanks for the info! I just bought 2 tickets and sent an email to all my friends alerting them to this. I would say that you did forget to mention that the price for all the happiness of seeing Leisha is only 10 bucks.

I’m sure it’ll sell out soon as it’ll even drag the lesbians who were too lazy to come the premiere of the L Word to come and see ‘Alice’ in her DC premiere.
