Music: March Music Roundup

Event Details: March Music Roundup - :

Taking a cue from Amy’s Weekend Art Roundups, I wanted to give all of you the heads up on what bands are coming through DC this month that could be worth checking out. I am trying to interview most of the people on this list, so you also won’t be surprised when something shows up about them the day they’re playing.

My descriptions of these bands are far from accurate (or even lucid) so I suggest following the links to their actual music if your interest is piqued.

I’ve also included a couple early April shows that could be of interest too.

March:

3/6:
-Sia and Har Mar Superstar: That “Breathe Me” girl and her opener, a Ron Jeremy look-alike who strips onstage. (9:30)

-Hey Willpower and MEN: Homo ex-Imperial Teen Bassist does dance rock, followed by JD from Le Tigre’s new band. (Black Cat)

3/12:
-Justice— The guys behind that “Do The d.a.n.c.e” song joins some others on the Myspace music tour. Its already sold out, but kudos to those who got their tickets ontime. (9:30)

3/15:
-
Bob Mould: Local gay DJ behind bear dance party Blowoff (and 90′s bands Sugar and Husker Du) plays his solo stuff. This will be followed by a Blowoff. (9:30)

-Black Lips: Cute boys who play 60s-esque rock, have a song called “Feeling Gay” and are known to make out with each other onstage. (Black Cat)

3/19:
-Ra Ra Riot: New York band that my friend Julie knows and says is really good. (Black Cat)

-Most Serene Republic, Miracle Fortress and Liam Finn: Three artists that I’m not familiar with, but come highly recomended by Pitchfork…yes, I read pitchfork. DC9 is also a really underrated venue. [Addendum: I just listened Miracle Fortress's song and it sounded like The Beach Boys. I'm in.](DC9)

3/21:
-Le Loup: Arcade Fire for English majors. I saw this show in December and it rocked. (Black Cat)

3/22:
-Mountain Goats: Quiet, folky music that a lot of people fucking love. (Black Cat)

3/23:
-Crystal Castles: I’ve heard this band described as “Nintendo-Core,” which means their new-wavey dance music has a lot of blips and bloops in it. (OttoBar in Baltimore)

3/24:
-Morcheeba: Get stoned and chill. (9:30)

3/27:
-Xiu Xiu and Thao Nguyen: Xiu Xiu is an expiremental (i.e. difficult) San Francisco band with a bisexual frontman. Thao and her band the Get Down Stay Down have a new CD that rocks and sound like Feist, but less sleepy. (Black Cat)

3/28:
-Stephen Malkmus and Jicks: Former Pavement frontman and his new band. I don’t really know anything else about them. (9:30)

-3/29:
-The Raveonettes: One of TNG Michael’s favorite bands. A Danish, 60′s throwback, velvet underground-y duo. Should be fun. (Black Cat)

-Ghostland Observatory: LCD-ish, Daft Punk-ish dance band. (9:30)

3/30:
-Caribou: More 60s-ish indie music. Am I seeing a trend? (Rock and Roll Hotel)

-The Dodos: My roommate LOVES this band and what I’ve heard has been pretty good. (DC9)

APRIL:

4/2:
-Jens Lekman: Buy your tickets now. Another Swede, doing awesome “Belle and Sebastian meets Leonard Cohen” pop with a seven piece band…made up of swedish milkmaids. Again, saw this last year and it rocked. (Black Cat)

4/4:
-Beach House: Like Portishead, but touring. (Rock and Roll Hotel)

4/11:
-Hot Chip: If this one hasn’t sold out yet, you’re fucking lucky. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. (9:30)

Zack, can you post your interviews prior to the day before? I wanted to see Dean & Britta and Jose Gonzales after reading your interviews with them, but I wasn’t able to plan time to do it because they played on the same day as I read your post.

Just a friendly FYI: Husker Du was from the 80s. Everyone should go out and get a copy of New Day Rising and Flip Your Whig!
