Washington DC: Tighten Up!

Event Details: Tighten Up! - :

A good friend of mine recently suggested that we get a group of friends together to head out to The Wag. Her invitation included the following: “I really want to do the Tighten Up in a space that is not my bedroom, living room, kitchen or cold storage for 35mms at work. And wear my busted white go-go boots.” Intrigued, I did some research.

It turns out, the “Tighten Up” is a song by Archie Bell & The Drells from 1968. It’s also a dance move that was introduced by the song. Not unlike The Mashed Potato (1962), the The Loco-Motion (also 1962), or Vogue (1990) for that matter.

The Wag is a monthly DJ night at the Black Cat. When pressed for a description of the night, my friend replied:

The Wag, featuring 60s garage and soul, is an awesome–and typically uncrowded—dance night, rare for the Black Cat these days. DJ Mark Zimin, the impresario who brought us Mousetrap, spins deluxe rock and soul records the first Saturday of every month. Put on your go-go boots or mod suits, tease your hair and come pull shapes! $5, Black Cat Backstage.

And considering the current state of affairs of DJ/dance nights and venues in DC, a fun and uncrowded night filled with old school jams might just be what the doctor ordered.
