Uncategorized: Misplaced Priorities

With all of the national tragedies that take place on a daily basis, none of them grip the attention of the media like a missing white girl. Usually, a blonde one. Why? I just don’t get it.
I wait for the day a black lesbian from Anacostia gets kidnapped and Fox news reminds the world of it every 10 minutes for two weeks. On that day, I’ll stop bitching about misplaced priorities.

I’ve thought it would make an interesting journalism dissertation to study how race and class influence the reporting about a victim. I bet you will find that middle-class, white women get more coverage and more front-page coverage than any other group. Even the supposedly “liberal media” have their own racist and classist biases.
Ben, I have had the very same thought that you did… and to put a contemporary spin on the question, why don’t we hear about minority kids who go missing, absent from school, whose house has a particularly odoriferous emanation? It’s a sad situation when race plays so much of a role in these things. I just don’t get it!
