Intellectual Eye Candy Alert

I have to admit that I regularly turn my television to the Tucker-Hardball-Countdown-Abrams lineup on MSNBC. Part of this is because I want to know what my mother is talking about when she goes on a rant about the latest politician who makes her angry. And part of this is because of my rather large crush on Rachel Maddow, a political analyst who has a radio show and appears on MSNBC all the time. Ms. Maddow has a Ph.D. in politics from Oxford, is an HIV/AIDS and gay marriage activist, and is ridiculously smart. Oh, and she’s also hot.

The crush reached a new level this week when I learned that my mother also adores Ms. Maddow, who just so happens to live a few towns over from where I used to live in Massachusetts. Today my mother found out that Ms. Maddow attends Northampton Pride, which set her aflutter.

I think that this has opened up new territory between me and my mother — my mother knows and loves lots of homos, but I’m pretty sure this is the first time she has a girl crush. Does anyone else out there share gay crushes with their parents?

My mom, who is straight and married to my father, developed such a large girl crush on TV actress Amy Brenneman that my sisters and I unofficially changed the name of her show from “Judging Amy” to “Hugging Amy.”

I love Rachel in a way only a gay man can love a lesbian. I used to listen to her on Unfiltered with Lizz Winstead and Chuck D until that show imploded. She’s such a reasonable voice for the perceived ‘radical’ left.

I guess I’m glad to see that Rachel’s imaginary paramours are almost inumerable and include, straight and gay men and women alike! But, alas, I guess that means that I wouldn’t be the only one throwing myself into her arms in the event of our elevator stalling/chance subway encounter/bumping elbows at Henrietta Hudsons…Jk:-) I almost feel guilty for the passion she elicits…I mean, I LOVE the brain, but — did anyone catch the meow yesterday (re Obama’s New Hampshire comment)?
