Politics: ENDA and Transgender Inclusion

Event Details: ENDA and Transgender Inclusion - :

The post “Thoughts From an Old Guy” sparked a debate about the inclusion of the T under the GLBTQI rainbow. I have my personal (and complicated) thoughts on such inclusion which I won’t go into now. But will share an announcement I just received from the Woodhull Freedom Foundation.

Join Mara Keisling, Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) for a discussion of what happened with the Employment Non-discrimination Act (ENDA) in the fall of 2007.
  • How and why were transgender people excluded from employment protection?
  • Why does transgender inclusion matter?
  • What are organizations like NCTE and Woodhull doing about it?
  • How can you get involved?

There will be time for discussion after the presentation.

This event is taking place on January 15, 2008, from 5:30 to 7 PM at the offices of NGLTF, 1325 Mass. Ave NW, Suite 600. Wine and cheese will be served.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on inclusion.

My gut tells me that we should not exclude them, even if it isn’t politically expedient, particularly considering the role they have played in “gay” liberation. I’m not sure what the older gentlemen mean’t by casting doubts in that area, but I’d be curious to hear his perspective as well.
