This American Eye Strain

As a follow up to Zack’s post about having to readjust how he looks at strangers on the street while in his home neighborhood in Chicago, let me present the following.

Dan Savage, of Savage Love fame, did a piece on This American Life back in 1999 for their episode called Advice. While I thought fitting Dan’s piece under the Advice category was a bit of a stretch, I have to say it was the best and most memorable “Act” of the show.

Unfortunately, I can’t link directly to Dan Savage’s piece, and it’s about half way through the online audio stream. However, I was savvy enough to upload it to a website where you can click and listen. (20 MB MP3 file!) The piece itself is about 15 minutes long, but he relates something very relevant to the whole accidentally-checking-straight-guys-out-on-the-street thing that Zack discusses in the first 5 minutes.

Update (6/3/2008): Now listen here and now w/o downloading, using this great audio widget I found!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
