Uncategorized: A Different Kind of Ladies Night — Friday
One of the best-known lesbian social events in the city is A Different Kind of Ladies Night, started three and half years ago by Bridget Hieronymus, who noticed the gap in nightlife option for D.C. lesbians, and decided to take matters into her own hands.
“I’d just gotten tired of the few options that D.C. had for women, and the options that did exist weren’t really geared toward women finding and meeting one another,” she said, “I wanted to provide places where women could actually talk to one another and meet and mingle, etc. I figured it that didn’t exist, I could make it exist.”
ADKLN events are held every Friday at Fab Lounge, and some Wednesdays at Topaz, with both events drawing a good crowd. ADKLN also holds the occasional event at Phase 1, such as the A Different Kind of Concert cancer benefit coming up on November 17.
ADKLN events, which include special concerts, Pride parties, and holiday happy hours, draw a wide-ranging crowd.
“It really varies from people in their young twenties to people in their sixties,” Hieronymus says, “I believe for a while there I had a group of women in their 70s!”
Hieronymus has since moved to NYC, where she’s exercised some of her some of her lesbian party-planning skills, holding two events over the summer and working with three other venues. She also continues to plan events in D.C. even though she doesn’t get to attend very many.
“I have a few friends who regularly attend and take pictures for me, but for the most part I still do it all,” she says. “I don’t feel like I need to have anyone else take over… But I gotta say that I really miss the D.C. lesbians. I’ve been doing ADKLN so long and have met so many people that when I do come to D.C. for an event, I feel like I’m coming home to hundreds of friends and family.”
The next ADKLN is tomorrow night, starting at 7 p.m. at Fab Lounge, 1805 Connecticut Ave., NW, on the second floor. As usual there are drink specials, a DJ, and no cover.

First time here? See what we're all about... Get involved... Send us a tip!...

Back in the early 70′s i did the same thing. The women needed a place where they could just relax, have a nice dinner, and conversation. There was no place in DC at the time that catered to the professional men and women that wouldn’t dare go to the other bars we had then.
Of course I got written up in the Gay Blade, which is what it was called then.
They called me a snob and all kinds of trash. lol
Which was ok, we had a nice place where we attracted women from all over the Eastern Seaboard actually. Doctors, Surgeons, Lawyers, Government people and Psychiatrists, etc.
We had Valet Parking (which was unheard of then) the waiters wore Tuxedo’s and the waitresses wore evening gowns.
Unfortunately it didn’t last very long because, as usual the women just don’t
support things as the men do.
The name was The Owl and Tortoise. Another thing that was unheard of, it was
on 19th street, in NW Washington in a very very nice area!
Good luck with all of your endeavors.
Sincerely,
Susan Lampione
